So I've been longjumping for a REALLY long time, but I never learned all the technical stuff, like how gain works or how sync works on every strafe. Today while playing someone told me I should try to increase my gain, but I have no idea how to so.

Here's a jump I just did, if someone could explain stuff about "Gained" that'd be great.

    [KZ] hideyoshi jumped 279.1538 units with a LongJump [9 Strafes | 276.145 Pre | 370 Max | Height 56.9 | 87% Sync | CJ: ✔ | -W: Х]
#. Sync Gained Lost MaxSpeed AirTime
    1. 77% 14.127 0.000 290.272 16%
    2. 90% 11.689 0.000 301.961 10%
    3. 92% 12.966 0.000 314.927 12%
    4. 83% 12.305 0.116 327.117 12%
    5. 91% 11.004 0.365 337.756 12%
    6. 93% 12.444 0.000 350.200 14%
    7. 88% 8.329 0.694 357.835 8%
    8. 91% 9.586 0.000 367.422 10%
    9. 86% 3.473 0.000 370.895 6%

Getting 370 max on a 9 strafe is actually really good, you don't need to improve your gain at all. Only if you do like 6-8 strafes is when you need to have really high gains to make up for the fact that you do less strafes.

I'm still confused why Deviance get so much more distance than me, when I have "better" stats than him sometimes. Guess I'll just have to practice more.

the mechanics are strangely undocumented considering the popularity of jumpmapping in CS. I expected some article equivalent to http://www.funender.com/quake/articles/strafing_theory.html when I started, but there isn't even something similar for 1.6 which has been around for forever. even better was the compass tool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Q9SvMLMWE&t=4m45s . visually represented the best position for the mouse to be for maximum acceleration. this is all stuff from 2003

as far as I can understand gain is just a function of sync. this doesn't necessarily mean perfect sync = max distance. airtime balance seems largely more important. there also seems to be some strangeness that happens during the prestrafe jump or the strafe after that are important but no one seems to understand

i asked deviance for some .dems. idk if hes gonna give. If I get first person demos of consistent 280ers ill attempt to see whats going on. personalyl ive been doing consistentish 275 and have hit my 282 max a million times but cant seem to get past it

In my opinion your overall sync number doesn't really matter, its where you sync that matters.
    For example an 8 strafe 50 50 50 50... will be far different to an 8 strafe 100 0 100 0 100 0 100 0.

Your gain ect is fine IMO. Wider strafes should make you go further. Try 8 / 7 strafes and widen them out.

Wide strafes = lots of speed, narrow strafes = not a lot of speed but better airpath. It's all about finding the perfect mix between wide strafes and a good airpath.
Hard question to answer without seeing gameplay but that's the simple answer.
