I've been climbing in the server for a few weeks now and I really enjoy it. I haven't climbed since 1.6 and I bought CS:GO 2-3 weeks ago and started having some fun at KZ maps (I only really do that in CS). I'm also kind of a game designer who only really delved into stuff like Unity, some 2D style games and what not, mostly designed during childhood for fun. Oh yeah, it's my first time using Hammer and working on CS maps - won't really be a problem, it's easy. However by noticing that there is basically only one map that climbers take seriously (cursedjourney hello.) I've come to a decision - design another map of the same genre of length and difficulty. Possibly longer and harder. Hopefully. It will. The map will be named 'kz_world_adventure' not only because I intend it to be a - fucking - life adventure to do it but also because I want to implement various scenarios. I expect this project to take around 3 to 4 months to finish. So that's it. Here goes my very early design of the map on paper, and my goals, as well as some things I'd like to ask given that I've never worked in CS maps before. Goals: Create a competitive, long and medium-hard to hard difficulty map. Design the map with various scenarios as if it would be a journey through the world, as described bellow. Make it so every jump is feasible by only jumping and strafing. Add shortcuts. Add insanely hard shortcuts. Add dead ends. Add long jumps in the end. Add some funny stuff at the end. Easter eggs. Easter eggs all over. Walls you can walk through in the most random places which will be hinted to in easter eggs. (Funny way to keep players interested until they find all of 'em). Scenarios: Devi'ls Pit - underground lava, starter area Excavation Point - underground earth Aztec Dens - outside aztec house in the jungle day Stranglethorn Jungle - outside jungle night Paradise Beach - outside seaside night Imhotep's Vale - outside+inside desert day Misty Mountains - outside mountain day Galadriel's Palace - outside+inside castle day Childen of the Forest - outside snowy mountain night, finish area Yeah, it's ambitious but I wouldn't do it if it wasn't. Like said I expect this to take me 3 to 4 months - it will probably take one or two more. Right now all I would need is: Feedback - Would you like to see other scenarios? Maybe some style of jumps that you like from some maps and would like to see mashed up in the same one? Textures - Can anyone tell me of a good place to get 'em? Preferably with good quality and detail. Map Settings - Are there any specific Hammer settings I should follow when creating a KZ map? !MOST IMPORTANT! Distances - How do I know the max distance (meaning hard) between two surfaces if they are in different heights? I know them for the same height (256, 272, 350, etc) but not when they are in different heights. !MOST IMPORTANT! Testing - Can anyone let me know a way to test my map with the KZ mod and tick? Or somewhere I can do it? I've seen a tutorial but I'd have to pay some $ per hour, can't afford. I've decided against uploading my drawings after some mappers advised me so. I will however start uploading the progress. I'll make this sort of a journal. Currently working on: Devil's Pit - Underground Lava, Starter Area Hammer questions: I have a few questions about Hammer I'd like some insight on, if anyone knows. I'll be adding them and removing as needed. How does one create a good looking fire such as cursedjourney has for the torches?
